Skylar Tibbits, MIT Self-Assembly Lab (REGISTRATION CLOSED)

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

Skylar Tibbits is the founder of the Self-Assembly Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Assistant Professor of Design Research in the Department of Architecture. He will be coming to New York to discuss his recent work and accomplishments.

A trained architect, designer and computer scientist, Tibbits teaches design studios at MIT’s Department of Architecture and co-teaches the seminar “How to Make (Almost) Anything” at MIT’s Media Lab. Before that, he worked at a number of design offices including Zaha Hadid Architects, Asymptote Architecture, SKIII Space Variations and Point b Design. His work has been shown at the Guggenheim Museum and the Beijing Biennale.

He has designed and built large-scale installations and exhibited in galleries around the world, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York. His work has been published extensively, for example in the New York Times, Wired and Fast Company, as well as in various peer-reviewed journals and books. He is the author of the book Self-Assembly Lab: Experiments in Programming Matter (Routledge, 2016), and Active Matter (MIT Press, 2017) also Editor-In-Chief of the journal 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing.

Tibbits has collaborated with a number of influential people over the years, including Neil Gershenfeld and The Center for Bits and Atoms, Erik and Marty Demaine at MIT, Adam Bly at SEED Media Group and Marc Fornes of THEVERYMANY. In 2007, he and Marc Fornes co-curated Scriptedbypurpose, the first exhibition focused exclusively on scripted processes within design. In 2007, he founded SJET, a multifaceted practice and research platform for experimental computation and design. SJET crosses disciplines from architecture and design, fabrication, computer science and robotics.

He has won many awards, including LinkedIn's Next Wave Award for Top Professionals under 35 (2016), R&D Innovator of the Year (2015), National Geographic Emerging Explorer (2015), an Inaugural WIRED Fellowship (2014), the Architectural League Prize (2013), Ars Electronica Next Idea Award (2013), TED Senior Fellowship (2012) and 2008 he was named a Revolutionary Mind by SEED magazine.
