Assistant or Associate Professor (without tenure): MIT Architecture

The MIT Department of Architecture seeks candidates for one full-time tenure track faculty position in Architecture + Urbanism at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor without tenure to begin January 1, 2023 or on a mutually agreed date thereafter.

We are opening a wide search for a new faculty member committed to innovation in research and teaching, with a particular focus on undergraduate programs. We seek candidates who can help us advance our vision of architecture which is equitable, sustainable, technologically advanced, and critically and culturally engaged. Aligned with this goal, we also seek the ability to participate in, and engage larger conversations on design across MIT, throughout diverse communities, and across the globe.

The MIT Department of Architecture is committed to design, research, and scholarship at the highest level. The department offers seven degrees, both professional and research oriented, at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels and is organized around five discipline groups: Architecture + Urbanism (A+U), Building Technology (BT), Design and Computation (Comp), History, Theory & Criticism with the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture (HTC + AKPIA), and Art, Culture & Technology (ACT).  Our faculty include architects, designers, engineers, artists, historians, urbanists, and building scientists who are committed to excellence, and collaborate extensively across the Department, School of Architecture and Planning, Institute, and beyond.

Given this context, the Department of Architecture seeks candidates representing diverse perspectives and modes of excellence, with a talent and ability in the production and teaching of architecture, urbanism, or design at a range of scales and contexts. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to advance our teaching and research among several possible areas of design inquiry that might include urbanism, contemporary culture & theory; computational methodologies; climate change and sustainability; design, technology & media; and material processes and fabrication. Interest and capacity to work and teach within a rigorous research environment that is addressing contemporary critical, practical, and theoretical issues within the field is also expected.

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching in design programs at every level, with an emphasis on research-focused graduate teaching and undergraduate teaching in architecture and design. In the context of MIT’s expanding undergraduate programs in design, the successful candidate will show potential to develop courses that reach across disciplinary boundaries, contributing to the Institute-wide conversation on design to which the Department of Architecture is a central contributor. The capacity for leadership in these conversations, and our contributing undergraduate programs will be a key criteria in the search.
